LA Trial of J. B. McNamara

LOS ANGELES, October 13-[…..]

To-day [at the McNamara trial] the most notable visitor undoubtedly was “Mother Jones,” “the woman to whom a strike is an inspiration to action-the only revolutionary woman we have in America,” as she has been described…..

From The Los Angeles Record of October 19, 1911:

MOTHER JONES CHEERS RAILROAD STRIKERS

“Mother” Jones, the famous character who has championed the cause of labor in every big strike in this country, spoke before a mass meeting of the striking railway employes at the Labor Temple Wednesday afternoon.

She resented the report that has gone out that union labor men were responsible for the dynamite found under the bridge near Santa Barbara just before the Taft special train passed along.

“That is their old game,” she declared. “That is the method they always use to end a strike. When they think that the strikers will win they always place dynamite, and then point the accusing finger at union labor and get you in jail. That is an old game of theirs.”

ON THE BOY SCOUT

“Mother” Jones also spoke against the boy scout movement, declaring that no mother should allow her son to join the ranks. She also spoke to the women who were in the audience, and declared that the eyes of the whole world are directed at California, and everyone wants to know what the women will do now that they have been given the ballot. “A grave responsibility rests on your shoulders,” she said. “Don’t shirk it. In the first place, get out and register.”

An appeal was made to the others to support Job Harriman, and the other members of the ticket which represents the labor movement.
