ALEXANDER RE-ELECTED MAYOR OF LAS ANGELES

Los Angeles, Cal., Dec. 6.-Although returns from yesterday’s election are incomplete, it seems certain that George Alexander, good government candidate for mayor, has defeated Job Harriman, Socialist candidate, by a vote of two to one. Alexander’s plurality will be close to 50,000.

There seems no doubt today that the McNamara confessions caused the Socialists’ defeat. Despite the claims of Harriman and his followers during the last few days that the dynamite case had nothing to do with the campaign, and their demand that it be not allowed to interfere, it evidently caused large numbers to stay away from the polls, who would otherwise have come out.

Harriman and his campaign manager are alleging gross frauds, but they would probably make no statement regarding them until returns are in.

It is estimated that 73,000 of the 83,000 women who registered went to the polls, and that Alexander got more than two-thirds of these votes.

A prohibition ordinance which would have made Los Angeles “the dryest town on the map” was also defeated by a vote of 3 to 1.
