Leaving Charleston at 12:15 a. m. September 1, Keeney and I crossed the Ohio River to Pt. Pleasant. R. M. Williams, then a district field worker, transported us to Columbus where with the assistance of John “Jock” Moore we found suitable headquarters on Long Street just off High.
Strange as is may seem, we later learned that Don Chafin was quartered at the Neil House just a few blocks away at the same time we were on Long Street. We kept in touch with developments through the press reports and by messenger until September 16. On this date we met with counsel at Athens, Ohio, and decided to return to Charleston and surrender to the authorities. With the assistant of Samuel B. Montgomery and J. H. (Peggy) Gibbs of Hartford City, we returned to Charleston and hid away near our homes until some of the acting officers of the union could arrange a meeting with the governor .
At 5:00 p. m., September 18, we appeared at the governor’s office and were taken in charge by deputy sheriffs John Copenhaver and T. Newcomer of Kanawha County on the warrants issued in Mingo County. They delivered us to the authorities at Williamson.
