Mother Jones News Round-Up for month of October, 1916

During the month of October, Mother was first found in New York City advising the wives of the street car strikers to put on their fighting clothes and go out and raise hell. Her words greatly shocked the kept press, the same press which is never much shocked whenever workers are killed on the job, or beaten, shot, and otherwise brutalized on the picket line by the powers-that-be.

Mother was next found in Illinois and Kentucky campaigning for the re-election of President Wilson and Senator Kern. She was sent into the region by the United Mine Workers of America to speak to the miners and other working men.

MOTHER JONES ABLE TO SPEAK.

Comrades the country over will be pleased to learn that Mother Jones is soon to be once more in the field [having recovered from a recent illness] and from now till election will divide her time between the 18th Illinois (Speaker Cannon’s) and the 11th Pennsylvania Congressional Districts, in which National board members of the United Mine Workers of America are candidates for Congress on the Socialist ticket, namely: John Walker and William Dettry.

In the latest issue of the Appeal to Reason we find messages from William D. Haywood to the people of Colorado. These messages were sent out to the Appeal by Big Bill from behind the bars of the Ada County Jail where the Socialist candidate for Governor resides awaiting trial in an attempted frame-up on a charge of having murdered the ex-Governor of Idaho. Also found was a notice announcing a meeting with Eugene Debs in Denver on Monday, November 5th, the day before the election.

I have just received information to the effect that Alva Adams, democratic candidate for governor of Colorado, in his canvass is reading telegrams purporting to be from my representatives. I desire to say to the working class of Colorado that no telegram or message of any description to Alva Adams or any one of his class has been authorized by me. Moreover, no one but the state committee of the Socialist party is empowered to speak for me politically. In every conversation I have had on the subject, in everything I have written, I made it distinctly understood that there shall be NO COMPROMISE IN COLORADO. I accepted the nomination in good faith. There has been a magnificent campaign made. I stand or fall by the decision of my class-the wage-earners. Union men and women, fellow-workers, Socialists, I have never betrayed you-and, by the Almighty, I never shall. I am with you in this fight to abolish special privileges, to establish equal opportunities, to insure justice, life and liberty.

Wilson kept us out of war. Therefore, if re-elected, he will continue to keep us out of war. How, we ask, can any intelligent person assume that there is the slightest basis for such reasoning? We can imagine a person attributing supernatural powers to Wilson accepting it, but he certainly would not be an intelligent person, or let us say, he accepted it as a matter of faith, and not of reason.

If Wilson should be re-elected, and the country does not go to war, that faith would naturally be strengthened among his supporters. But, if, under the same circumstances, the country did go to war, there would be nothing easier than for his supporters to claim that it was forced on him; that he was not able to keep the country out of war, despite their belief that he could. That belief would be conveniently forgotten, and they would hate to be reproached with ever entertaining it.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Oct. 25.-Eugene Debs, twice Socialist party candidate for president, may become the first Socialist congressman from Indiana. He is a candidate from the Fifth Indiana district against Ralph Moss, Democrat and one of the authors of the rural credits bill, and Everett Sanders, Republican attorney of this city.

Debs is making a rapid-fire campaign. Contributions have come from Socialists in many parts of the United States and other countries. Many miners in the district are Socialists and Debs’ followers count heavily on his personality, which once carried him into the office of county clerk with more votes than all his opponents combined.

Dear Appeal:-I want to report conditions as I find them in the new states. I entered the territory at Wilburton. There the democratic nominee for United States Senator was holding a meeting. The committee called on me and asked that the meetings be held jointly, as mine was also billed. I wanted to hear how he presented the struggle of the toiling millions from a democratic standpoint. He showed the wrongs of the republican party, and the beauties of his own. I followed, and showed up that they were both wings of the vulture class and if that class did not have both those wings they could not exist twenty-four hours. I explained to the audience that I had been on the firing line of the industrial battle for years, and that democratic bullets shot workingmen, and their blood had watered the highways just the same as when republican bullets shot them. The result was that a Socialist local of seventy of eighty members was organized soon after.

McPartland’s Murderous Schemes

After a preliminary hearing before Probate Judge Boomer, Steve Adams is bound over to the district court, which meets Oct. 15. When I arrived in Wallace, Idaho, Sept. 26, the city was full of detectives, headed by the notorious James McPartland [McParland], alias Jim McKenna, of the Pinkerton-Mollie Maguirs [Molly Maguires] fame, who is now trying to railroad Haywood, Moyer and Pettibone, officials of the Western Federation of Miners, to the gallows. Steve Adams, who was arrested shortly after Harry Orchard’s alleged confession charging the miners’ officials with being implicated in the murder of ex-Governor Steunenburg, is now charged with the murder of an alleged claim jumper named Fred Tyler.

McPartland’s Sleuthing.

Adams had been relied upon by McPartland and Governor Gooding to corroborate Orchard’s confession, or the main part of it, and was being held in jail (with his wife, Mrs. Adams, being kept in the woman’s ward for that purpose.)

Adams denies that there was or is any truth in what McPartland and Gooding say he swore to, and says that the statements about his knowledge of the guilt of the officers of the miners was written up by McPartland or Gooding, or both; and he was compelled to swear to them by threats of Governor Gooding, who stated that if the people of Colorado got hold of him he would be mobbed and killed. All of this Adams has given out through signed documents, witnessed to by Mrs. Adams, his wife, and handed to J. W. Lillard, Adams’ uncle, a sick ranchman in Washington, and is now in the hands of Moyer, Haywood and Pettibone’s attorneys. On application Adams was immediately released on a writ of habeas corpus, but was at once arrested for the murder of Fred Tyler.

Durant, I. T., Sept 1.-Mother Jones, of Philadelphia, who is well known from Maine to California, as a socialist agitator of great prominence, was greeted at Shuler Park last night by a large and enthusiastic audience, many of the people coming from a distance. The speaker was introduced by R. M. Coon. Mother Jones in her address principally talked upon the labor struggles which her party declares is in existence. She is a fluent talker and is very emphatic in her denunciations. Her remarks were at all times heartily applauded. She will leave today for Madill, where she will address a socialist meeting tonight.
