Mother Jones News Round-Up for May 1909:
-Found Arriving in Girard, Kansas, at End of May

Mother Jones w edit crpd ag, Dnv Rck Mt Ns p2, Feb 28, 1909

Throughout the month of May, we found Mother Jones within the pages of the Appeal to Reason where she was announced as a featured speaker, along with Eugene Debs, at the Kansas Socialist Women’s Conference scheduled for June 4th and 5th. The May 29th edition of the Appeal reported that:

Mother Jones reached Girard yesterday and says that unless she is obliged to return to Washington before the day set for our conference she will gladly assist.

Mother was also found May 19th speaking at the Switchmen’s convention held in Peoria, Illinois.

MOTHER JONES NEWS ROUND-UP FOR May 1909
———-

From The Girard Press of May 6, 1909:

Girard Federation of Clubs.

The Girard Federation of Clubs met at the home of Mrs. C. H. Burnett last Friday.

After the business session the Twentieth Century Club gave a play, “The Old Maids’ Tea Party,” the cast of characters being as follows:

MJ as Character in Play, Girard Press p6, May 6, 1909

It was enjoyed by all present.

The decorations were carnations and roses.

Address-Mother Jones
Address-Eugene V. Debs…..

Poem for Mother Jones by E. O. McIntosh of Omaha, Neb.

POEM for Mother Jones by McIntosh, AtR p5, May 8, 1909

From the Chicago Proletarec of May 11, 1909:
-Note: Proletarec is a Slovenian-language Socialist weekly of Chicago.

V organizacijo!
—–
Delavci, družite se v socialistične klube!

[…..]
GIBANJE V KLUBIH.

[…..]
Razredno zavedne ženske v mnogih slučajih bolje agitirajo kot moški, kar dokazujejo socialistinje raznih narodnosti — tudi slovenske — v Chicagu in drugih mestih (n . pr. Mother Jones)……

Roughly translated from Slovenian:

In the organization!
—–
Workers, socialize in socialist clubs!

[…..]
Movement in Clubs

[…..]
Classically aware women in many cases are more agitated than men, as evidenced by socialists of various nationalities – including Slovene – in Chicago and other cities (eg, Mother Jones).

From the Appeal to Reason of May 15, 1909:
-From the Southwest Edition-Kansas:

WOMAN’S CONVENTION.

[by Acting Secretary-Treasurer Geo. D. Brewer]

What have you done about urging the women to attend the convention to be held in Girard on June 4th and 5th? Every woman in Kansas, who is a member of the party with a red card in her possession, who can possibly arrange it, should be present. The paid-up card will entitle you to participate in all the deliberations of the convention. Then consider the opportunity. You will be a guest at the “center of the universe,” where the Appeal is published, get to visit with Debs and hear him speak, receive the encouraging message from the lips of the greatest woman of the modern age-MOTHER JONES…..

From The Rock Island Argus of May 20, 1909:

SWITCHMEN HEAR LEADERS
—–
Day at Peoria Convention Is Given
Over to Addresses.

Peoria, Ill., May 20.-The switchmen’s convention yesterday gave way to speeches by members. J. T. McCarthy of New York, organizer of the United Hatters of America; Jefferson Pierce of the American Federation of Labor and “Mother” Jones addressed the meeting. The age limit set at 60 years and an increase in the dues without raising the benefit fund, were the principal things accomplished by the members of the ladies’ auxiliary yesterday.

———-

From the Bisbee Daily Review of May 28, 1909:
-Note: The Editor seems most displeased with Mother’s ability to raise funds for the defense of Our Mexican Comrades!

WITHOUT REASON.

The continued attempt of the Bisbee Miner and the visiting socialists who have been in Tombstone recently to created public sympathy and sentiment for the Mexicans convicted on the charge of having violated the neutrality laws of this country, is without warrant or good reason. The friends of Magon, Villareal and Rivera will quite naturally be disturbed because of their punishment, but there is no reason why anyone should attempt to make martyrs of the so-called revolutionists. They had a fair trial in the court provided for trying those who violated the laws of the United States. They had able council and they were not without means in conducting their defense.

It is said that “Mother” Jones collected more than three thousand dollars for the defense fund of the revolutionists. The Western Federation of Miners became interested in the defense of these prisoners and gave what aid was possible, both in influence and money.

So far as this paper is concerned it is hoped that we have heard the last of theses cases. They were magnified far beyond their importance. The men now in prison were simply deluding a lot of poor and ignorant Mexicans with the belief that it would be easy to overthrow the Diaz government which resulted in several being shot on the other side of the line. Mexico never was in danger from the so-called revolution, but the agitation carried on by a few would-be leaders was breeding much trouble along the border which to our mind was calculated to do more harm to American interests in Mexico than to the Diaz government.

From the Appeal to Reason of May 29, 1909:

From the Southwest Edition-Kansas:

Conference of the Woman’s Committee of Kansas.

Great interest has been manifested in coming conference of June 4th and 5th. Some of the committees expect to attend in a body and should as many attend as we expect there will be over a hundred women gathered in Girard, planning the enlistment of all thinking women of the state in the study and propaganda of Socialism.

Not only are the women interested, but many men express their intention of being present at this meeting. Mother Jones and Comrade Debs have promised to be present unless something now unforeseen prevents their attendance. Mother Jones reached Girard yesterday and says that unless she is obliged to return to Washington before the day set for our conference she will gladly assist…..
