Mother Jones Interviewed During July Visit to Atlanta, Georgia

From The Atlanta Constitution of July 9, 1916:

Mother Jones, Atlanta Constitution, July 12, 1916

“Mother” Jones Will Reach Atlanta
Monday on a Secret Mission
—–

“Mother” Jones, famous internationally for her work for miners, will arrive in Atlanta Monday morning on a mission, the nature of which she refuses to disclose in advance, and for a visit of indefinite duration.

She is coming directly from Washington, D. C., and will be met upon arrival by a party of local friends, headed by Jerome Jones, who Saturday received a telegram from William Green, Chicago, secretary of the United Mine Workers of America, announcing “Mother” Jones intention to pay this city a call.

The visit of “Mother” Jones to Atlanta while the general assembly is in session would in itself be somewhat significant, because she is noted as a lobbyist and worker for laws which are intended to brighten and lighten the lot of the laborer. Many take her visit just at this time, with a factory inspection-child labor and factory labor bill on the calendar for debate and vote in the house during the week, as especially significant, and in all probability the week’s legislative grind will be materially enlivened by her presence in the city, if not in the lobbies and the galleries at the capitol.

“Mother” Jones-she is known by no other name-is a unique and at once an extraordinary American woman. About 80 years old, she has devoted the greater part of her life thus far to the cause of labor, and most of her years have been spent in the mining camps of the west, although she is equally well-known among the underground workers of every other section of the country and in Canada.

MOTHER JONES AT CONCORDIA.
—–

“Mother” Jones, one of the most prominent and most widely known of the Socialist contenders, will deliver an address at Old Concordia Thursday night. It will be her first visit to Little Rock, and she is sure to attract a large audience.

From The Arkansas Democrat of July 6, 1906:

MOTHER JONES ON SOCIALISM
—–
Well-Known Leader of Socialist Propaganda
Delivered Lecture at Old Concordia-
Aggregations of Wealth and
All Political Parties Condemned.
—–

“Mother Jones” talked to a large audience last night at Old Concordia Hall on Socialism. She touched on all parts of the question, telling some of her experiences in the capital and labor fights for the last thirteen years, in which she has nearly always been more or less concerned. She has been jailed several times, on account of her activity in exhorting employes to stand up for their rights, and her encouragement of strikes, etc. Mrs. Jones had many a rap for the political party in power in the national government, paid her respects to Bryan, told of the greed and soullessness of Rockefeller and his “crew,” the steady gain in socialism everywhere, its beautiful points and the necessity of concerted action for the final overthrow of existing government and the establishment of the peaceful Socialistic rule, when “honor and work will be equally divided among the people.” “As it is the lower class has all the work and the honor, while the others have neither,” the speaker declared.

Evansville, Indiana – Two Interviews with Mother Jones

The people of Evansville were fortunate enough to enjoy the presence of Mother Jones at their Labor Day celebration yesterday. While in Evansville, Mother was interviewed by two of the town’s newspapers-which interviews we are pleased to offer in full.

“Roasted babies” and Children’s blood” were articles on the oratorical menu that was served by “Mother” Jones to an audience of 1500 in Cleveland Square Saturday night. The fiery speaker called a spade a spade and the crowd was with “Mother” from start to finish. Cries of “Give it to ’em, ‘Mother,'” “Tell it to ’em were heard after many of the speakers most telling points; but Mother needed no invitation.

“When George Baer told me that God Almighty had appointed him to take care of us working people, I answered him that God Almighty must have had a jag on when he did the appointing,” shouted the aged speaker, while her listeners broke out into a pandemonium of applause and laughter…

From the Appeal to Reason: Mother Jones to Massachusetts Socialists

From this week’s Appeal:

Mother Jones, Mar 11, 1905, AtR

FROM MOTHER JONES.
—–

Through the columns of the APPEAL I desire to give expression to my deep appreciation of the thoughtful and kind consideration of the Massachusetts comrades during my recent illness. Your letter to Comrade Hogan, instructing him to spare no expense and that you would foot the bills, bears within itself a deep sense of comradeship which is worth much to us in the movement. I have never yet had to call on the comrades, having always felt that the Socialist movement had no right to pay my bills. My life work is consecrated to the oppressed and suffering ones of the human race; nevertheless, I feel a deep sense of gratitude to our Massachusetts comrades who so promptly and generously offered such substantial assistance.

While life remains I shall always be with you in the conflict.

MOTHER JONES.
