Fort Wayne, Indiana – Claude G. Bowers Describes Debs on Speaker’s Platform

Following a speech given May 20th by Eugene Debs at Moose Hall in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Claude G. Bowers devoted space in his column, “Kabbages and Kings,” to give a moving description of Debs as he appeared on the speaker’s platform:

Last week a tall, lean, long-legged man with a lean, thin, sharp face and piercing eyes, stood on the platform at the Moose hall in this city and talked for more than an hour on “Socialism and Democracy.” It was evident that the greater part of the audience was in sympathy with his ideas and more than ordinarily in love with the man. He was a socialist,-perhaps the most famous America has produced….

There was no bitterness against men. Very little mere bitterness against principles and systems. The most biting things were the flash of wit and humor. These cut like a knife but the audience laughed. The speaker was Eugene V. Debs. As an orator he is among the finest….

Bayonne, New Jersey – Strikers Return to Work Defeated

BAYONNE STANDARD OIL STRIKE BROKEN

The arrival in Bayonne, on October 18th, of the Federal Mediators, John A. Moffitt and John A. Smythe from the Department of Labor, proved to be of no benefit to the strikers’ cause. The strike was broken by the defection of the American workers who abandoned their foreign-born fellow workers and returned to work on October 19th. The foreign-born workers, mostly Polish speaking, were forced to give up the fight for a living wage on Friday October 20th.

Wallace, Idaho – Adams Arrives to Face Charge of Murder

ADAMS AND GUARDS ARRIVE IN WALLACE

and Preliminary Set for Thursday-
Newton Glover Arrested for Complicity in
Crime and Warrant Out for Others.

(Special Dispatch.)

WALLACE. Sept 18.-Sheriff Sutherland arrived in Wallace at noon today with Steve Adams, with whom he had driven across the country most of the way from Boise. The party left Moscow yesterday and drove to a small station east of Tekoa, where this morning they took the train for Wallace. The sheriff and Adams are considerably worn from the journey, but both are in good spirits. The sheriff succeeded in his undertaking of bringing Adams to Wallace from Boise without stepping outside the state. Adams was arraigned this afternoon on the charge of murdering John Doe Tyler in the St. Joe country. Newton Glover, an alleged accomplice of Adams and Jack Simpkins, was brought in on the same train. Mrs. Adams and children were also on the same train. They greeted Adams affectionately.

Joe Hill’s Great-Grand Niece, Lovisa Samuelsson performs a song she wrote for Joe Hill at the Joe Hill Centennial Celebration in Salt Lake, Utah. She is joined on stage by her mother, Pia Samuelsson, and her uncle, Rolf Hägglund. They are descendants of Joe Hill’s brother Efraim Hägglund. She is playing on the guitar of Utah Phillips which contains some of Joe Hill’s ashes.

FELLOW WORKER JOE HILL

At 7:40 a. m. in the prison yard of the Utah Sate Prison, Fellow Worker Joe Hill was shot to death by firing squad. Ed Rowan and other friends and fellow workers whom Hill had invited to attend the execution were not allowed to enter the prison. According to Rowan, they stood at the gate and heard the shots ring out “like musketry in battle,” a sound, says Rowan, that is still ringing in his head.
