State of Arizona – Mother Jones Stumps for Governor Hunt
The above appeared on page four of the September 1st edition of The Graham Guardian of Safford, Arizona. The paper is clearly not a fan of Mother Jones. On page one, we find the following account of the speech made on August the 21st by Mother while campaigning for Governor Hunt in Phoenix:
THE STORMY PETREL
—–
Mother Jones Is Stumping the State
for Gov. Geo. W. P. Hunt
—–Governor Hunt has “Mother” Jones stumping the State in his behalf; she is accompanied by G Grow, whose only claim to fame is the fact that he was charged with and imprisoned for complicity in the bombing of the Times building. “Mother” Jones held a Hunt meeting in Phoenix on the 21st of August, when among other things she said:
They say I am profane. I am not working for Jesus, but for prosperity.
The ministers in Colorado told the women “vote for Jesus,” and they got in the neck.
We dont want Sunday schools. We’ve had enough of them. We want to fight.
When they are burning in hell, I’ll be fighting.
We’ll meet you the field of battle and give you hell.
I am not afraid of the Press or Militia. I would fight God himself, if He didn’t play square with me.
Cats and parasites of the woman’s clubs and the temperance brigade. We dont want ’em yowling for us.
Slimy rats with decayed brains.
I never knew a bad boy who had not had bad mother.
The mothers of those who are opposing Governor Hunt must have been rotten.
I wouldn’t say “your honor” to any Governor but Hunt.
One wonders what the noble women of the State think of the foul-mouthed virago, who called them “cats and parasites?”
What will the women of the churches think of the woman who would stand in public and say that she “not working for Jesus but for prosperity?”
What do the mothers of the State think of the woman who said that she never knew a “bad son who had not had bad mother?”
Also on page one of the same edition, we find The Graham Guardian troubled that Mother Jones and other labor leaders support Governor Hunt, while, at the same time, opposing prohibition:
LIQUOR INTERESTS ARE DISCOURAGED
—–
Whiskey Ring Is Accused of Aiding
Hunt In His Campaign
—–
FIGHTS AGAINST PROHIBITION
—–
Is Managed by Members of the Hunt
Campaign Committees in State
—–Phoenix, Arizona Sept. 1.-
[The article names supporters of Governor Hunt’s re-election campaign who also oppose prohibition, referring to them as the “whiskey ring.” A connection is made between the Western Federation of Miners and this so-called “whiskey ring.” The Guardian finds it to be quite the scandal that anyone who opposes prohibition would also support Gov. Hunt. The article goes on to implicate Mother Jones in this nefarious conspiracy:]
And evidently these troubles [evidence of a so-called “whiskey scandal”] are not enough to heap on the heads of the whiskey group, for Mother Jones followed, and in all of her speeches made since she came to Arizona, after she was through lauding Hunt and his administration, she wound up by talking against prohibition. Her remarks of condemnation of the Sunday School organizations and the W. C. T. U. have been hard for the “whiskeyites” to explain. They do not deny that Mother Jones divided her time half for whiskey and half for Hunt.
The fact that all concerned in aiding the fight against prohibition are giving part of their time in the fight for Hunt has made it easy for the accusers of the whiskey crowd to claim that the whiskey trust is backing Hunt’s campaign and it has killed their chances and makes them sad. It is a funny combination of affairs and one causing many sides to make explanations.
