MOTHER JONES TALKS FOR M’NAMARAS

Mother Jones, famous for her work throughout the country for strikers, Saturday night addressed a large gathering at union hall in behalf of the McNamara defense fund. Mother Jones is 79, yet her white hair is all that would show her age, for she is youthful in talk and actions.

Mother Jones pleaded for funds for the McNamara defense. She declared that union men would never stoop to blow up the Times building.

From The Fresno Tribune of November 22, 1911:

“WAR AGAINST UNIONS, NOT M’NAMARAS”

-MOTHER JONES

Declares Men Are Victims of Gigantic Plot

This is not a war against the McNamara brothers but against organized labor. The McNamaras are but the targets for the shafts of capital in a tremendous struggle against unionism. On the outcome of this battle, organized labor will either go down and out or it will go up, up.”

With a voice as strong as a man’s in determined tones, and emphasizing her words with a hat pin held in her clenched fist, Mother Jones in an interview with a Tribune reporter, thus expressed herself this morning regarding the fight that is being made in Los Angeles. Mother Jones is 79 years of age as time counts it. In spirit and activity she is not a day over 40.

Mother Jones is in Fresno in the interest of the California McNamara Defense league.

The object of my state wide campaign is two-fold,” she said. “Primarily it is that of securing funds.

NEED $1,000,000

“With the money pouring in from Wall street, we need $1,000,000 to combat the forces which are trying to overpower us in this case. I am asking every union man in the state of California for one day’s pay for this fund. Thus far I have met with unqualified success. All the unions that I have addressed in Fresno and other points have come nobly to the rescue and I have no doubt that all will fall into line.

“Are you convinced of the innocence of the McNamara?” was asked her.

“Absolutely,” was the prompt reply. “I have been in these struggles long enough to know just what contemptible methods are employed by the money pirates. I have talked with the boys personally and there is not a particle of doubt in my mind but that they are the victims of a dastardly plot.

NOW CLASS WAR

“The second part of my mission is to awaken in the heart of every California laboring man the fact that he is up against a class war such as has never been witnessed before in the history of the world.”

Tonight at Labor hall, the noted speaker will address the mill men and other locals. She arrived in the city last night from Bakersfield in company with F. P. Lamoreux, editor of the Labor News and went with him directly to the Carpenter’s union meeting.

For forty-five minutes she addressed that body, with the result that immediate steps [were organized?] toward carrying out the plans outlined. Mother Jones will leave tonight for San Jose.

It was announced this afternoon from Labor headquarters that Mother Jones has been induced to remain over until tomorrow night. Arrangements have been completed for an address at the Teal’s theater tomorrow night, following the second performance. In her talk Mother Jones promises to tell something of the conditions of coal miners throughout the country, having spent a large part of her life time among them.
